How started fishing
I started fishing at a young age with my grandfather. We fished some local jackpot tournaments which we both enjoyed. My parents paid my first year of entry fees as a co-angler in the ABA Weekend Series, for my high school graduation gift. Two years later I won The ABA national campionship as a co-angler on Old Hickory Lake in Tennessee. I was 19 years old at the time. The following year I fished as a boater. I am now 22 and have been with ABA every year since.
Aspirations or goals with fishing
My goal is to eventually be able to fish full time and be an ambassador for the sport. This would include promoting my sponsors and their products.
Favorite way to fish
Jig fishing is my favorite type of fishing. I can almost always find a way to catch fish with this bait. It has helped me perfect my techniques with all types of fishing.
Most exciting fishing experience
The most exciting experience I have had with fishing was winning the Weekend Series national championship. After leading the first three days and then having a chance to win it all was one of the most exciting things I have ever done. Coming in the last day and waiting for the other fisherman was a very nervous time. Then when I found out I won, it was an incredible moment. An experience I'll never forget.
How preps for a tournament
I first begin by resarching the lake or studying mapping and contour of the lake. I then figure out what equiptment I need to bring to a new lake, how many rods and everything I need. When fishing a lake I know it is easy and I dont prep much.
Three favorite search baits
My first search bait and all around lure is a jig. I can cover alot of water with the bait. My second search bait would have to be a crankbait of some type, which I can speed fish down a bank and cover a large area in a small amount of time. My third search bait would have to be a jerkbait which helps me look for schooling fish.
Best tournament finish and what you did that day when you were fishing.
Weekend Series National Championship, Old Hickory Lake I fished with Adam Wagner the last day. Adam fished with a topwater crank bait. I decided I would fish a jig so I could fish under him. It worked and I came in with a nice limit and ended up winning the co-angler championship.
Most challenging part of tournament fishing
My most challenging thing in fishing tournaments would have to be other fisherman. Trying to fish with someone over on your next spot or watching over your shoulder is by far the hardest mile stone I have found in tournament fishing. Because of the expense of tournament fishing, it would be almost impossible without the help of sponsors. I want sponsors whose products are reliable, because I promote, use and recomemend them to others.
When tournaments don't go my way
I never let a bad event get under my skin. I just look towards the next event and put the past behind me. Then I go forward and work on how I can improve.
Advice to give to an aspiring tournament angler:
The one piece of advice I would give to anyone tournament fishing is that you can only control the varibles that you can control. But work to be the best you can be.
Some shared general bass fishing techniques for people just getting into the sport
For the new fisherman I have learned don't over think it when you fish a tournament. Most the time I have two or three rods on my deck.. If you stay after them all day and put your bait in front of enough fish, you'll do alright.
