What you should know about Matthew:
Fishing is my passion, my therapy, and it’s where I pray. Next to my amazing family it’s my favorite joy in life.
How Matthew started fishing
I started fishing with my father as far back as I can remember. I was fortunate to have a father that was as passionate about being on the water and fishing as he was. Growing up in California right next to the Delta really solidified my love for river bass fishing. Whenever I’m on the water now I remember fishing with him as a child.
Aspirations or goals with fishing
I am 100% in it to win it. I only have a few years till I retire from the military then I will be solely concentrated on fishing and the industry. I want to live my passion every day and this sport is what I love to do.
Favorite way to fish
Deep, shallow, docks or laydowns doesn't matter, put a jig in my hand and watch me go.
Most exciting fishing experience
My most exciting experience was fishing with warriors on the water. Lots of great Anglers, a large venue, and the experience of getting to take a service member out for the day was amazing.
How Matthew preps for a tournament
Lots of online data mining. But the night before every tournament, no matter how much I’ve studied or pre-fished, I still feel like a kid waiting on Christmas day.
Three favorite search baits
Swimbait, Chaterbait, and Crankbait
Best tournament finish and what you did that day when you were fishing.
I've finished 1st in my share of tournaments but, I'm most proud of my 3rd place finish on Roanoke during a 2 day tournament. After day one I was in 12th place and on day 2 I really put my head down and pulled enough to finish 3rd. Competing with the heat and the biting flies all day was rough, fishing was good but you had to drag a worm nice and slow. At the end I felt like I had just run a marathon but I pulled out a decent finish
Most challenging part of tournament fishing
For me I’ve always believed the hardest part is believing in yourself. Have the confidence to trust what you're doing instead of listening to the little voices in your head that may be casting doubt.
When tournaments don't go my way
As they say “you can’t win them all†but when things aren’t going your way that’s when you really have to focus and trust your instincts. Trust your gut, ALWAYS
Advice to give to an aspiring tournament angler:
If this sport is something you love to do then jump in with both feet. You’ll be amazed at what you will learn from this community. Most Anglers just love to fish and are more than willing to help you develop.
