What you should know about Mike:
Grew up on local lakes. Parents were local water ski performers. Didn't start fising until 2010. Got hooked and love it.
How Mike started fishing
Had a small group of guys that all worked together at a Chevy dealership that enjoyed bass fishing. One of them decided to have a inner company bass tournament and I was asked to go with another co-worker. We finished 2nd and I was hooked on tournament fishing. Started my wife tournament fishing in a small group of Adam&Eve tournaments and she loved it. We moved up into bigger tournaments and started placing in the money. Eventually found ABA.
Aspirations or goals with fishing
I would love to travel around with the pro-tours from all the divisions and fish the lakes they fish and hang-out and learn from the pros.
Favorite way to fish
Old monster worm texas rigged. Caught my personal best 8.5 lbs at Santee Cooper in addition to all my bigger fish have came off that set-up.
Most exciting fishing experience
Catching my personal best at Santee Cooper and catching my largest limit at Santee Cooper.
How Mike preps for a tournament
Look online to see what others have done at that lake in the past. Go to tackle shops in the area and talk to the locals. Get on the lake and ride around checking different areas to see what I like and see what fits my style of fishing.
Three favorite search baits
Big worm, Chatterbait, Rattletrap
Best tournament finish and what you did that day when you were fishing.
Best finish was on Santee Cooper. Had gone down about a month before the tournament. Met a man that was a retired pro and made a lifelong friend. He took me out and showed me around different areas of the lake. Really help because the lake is a little dangerous if you don't know your way around. He and I talk every week since and that was 3 years ago. There was a big FLW tournament the week before us and Brian Thrift won it. I fished the exact area that Brian fished a week earlier and I won our tournament.
Most challenging part of tournament fishing
Fishing against local guys that know the lake you are on very well. Trying to figure out what to do at any given time during the day.
When tournaments don't go my way
Talk to the winners or the ones that did well to see if I can get any information that may help me the next time I go on that body of water. Try to be like a sponge and soak up all the knowledge I can. With my limited experience bass fishing, I will accept any help.
Advice to give to an aspiring tournament angler:
Never give up. Fish hard from start to finish. I've seen tournaments won in the last hour.
Some shared general bass fishing techniques for people just getting into the sport
Don't have any real techniques that are worth sharing. I fish sloooowww with a big worm on a texas rig. That is really all I can say, if you think you are going slow, your not, slow down and really work an area over.
