What Truck, Boat and Outboard does run?
I own a 16' Bass Tracker boat with a 40HP Mercury Outboard motor. I purchased it back in 2013 as a basic bare boat and have been modifying it to my liking. Iíve extended the front deck to have a greater fishing platform, added in a permanent cooler, 2 storage bins, and an in-deck rod holder section. My boat isnít one of the top end fishing boats that youíll find at tournaments, but I love what Iíve made it into it works very well with me. I tow it around with a 2013 RAM 2500, and honestly I get poked at for having such a big truck towing a smaller boat, but thereís nothing wrong with having lots of power!
I donít have any sponsors, but Iím working my but off to get my name out there in the fishing world to let companies know that Iím serious about fishing and I would be value added in representing their products!
What does for a living:
Iím currently stationed at McConnell AFB in Wichita Kansas, and Iím a full time active duty Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force. Thatís why I joined the ABA, since I really only have time on the weekends to do any type of serious fishing!
What you should know about :
I'm a 33 year old farm boy from Upstate New York, but I spent a majority of my career in the southern states. I met my wife in South Carolina and brought her over here with me to Kansas where I plan on spending the rest of my career until I retire.
How started fishing
I fell in love with fishing at an early age, but I never got the chance to get knowledgeable and serious about the sport until a few years ago. Since then Iíve become addicted to bass fishing because I love the fight they put up and the rewarding feeling once you get them in the boat! Iíve only fished one tournament since Iíve moved to Kansas, but I plan on doing a bunch more this year.
Aspirations or goals with fishing
My goal is to fish in enough tournaments to qualify for one of the big events like a BassMaster Classic. Winning something like that is a dream of mine that I would like to fulfill in the next few years. Itíll take a lot of hard work, but Iím willing to do what it takes!
Favorite way to fish
Iím definitely an active type fisherman, that why I like bass fishing. Iím not really a ďthrow your line in and waitĒ kind of guy. Constantly moving and fishing every type of cover I can find is more exciting than finding a clear spot in open water and hope you get a bite.
Most exciting fishing experience
So far in Kansas, my best fishing trip was on Lake Cheney where I was able to pull out 8 huge stripper in 30 minutes. I donít know what it was about that day, but the fish were all over whatever I threw at them. It was definitely exciting!
How preps for a tournament
Seeing how I havenít done too many yet, I would just do what I always do before a trip. Check over all my gear to make sure itís in working order, change out some fishing line on the reels, and make sure I have enough bait to get me through the trip.
Three favorite search baits
I like using paddle tail swim baits first at every hole. Like I said, Iím an active type fisherman, so I enjoy the constant reeling and casting. Other than that I use all different color tube baits, and the occasional crank bait when Iím fishing down deep.
Best tournament finish and what you did that day when you were fishing.
Most challenging part of tournament fishing
When tournaments don't go my way
Advice to give to an aspiring tournament angler:
Some shared general bass fishing techniques for people just getting into the sport
Patients and persistence is key to any fishing trip, but I would also say that being thorough is another key to be successful. If youíre fishing cover, hit every side and depth of that cover. Donít just throw in a bait once and move on if you didnít get a bite. You may have just thrown it behind the fish and they didnít see it! Give the fish a few presentations and youíll be sure to at least get a curiosity bite!
