White Wins on Onedia
August 5, 2023, Brewerton, NY. Jody White from Shaftsbury, VT, emerged victorious at the Oneida Lake tournament in New York, securing a $5000 prize with a catch of 20.82 lbs. The event took place at Oneida Shores Campground, Brewerton, NY, renowned for its abundant population of large smallmouth bass. Despite challenging conditions, sizeable smallmouth bass were presented on stage.
This marks Jody's second consecutive win in the ABA Bass Open Series NE Division.
Jody shared, "I utilized a popper, a beast coast jig, and a flatworm to catch my fish. While I caught one significant fish in shallow waters, the rest were caught at depths ranging from 12 to 15 feet. I found success with a brown back flat worm and a green pumpkin jig. My fishing route covered about half the lake, including areas like Shackleton. Although I returned without much success initially, I managed to land another 4-pounder about an hour before concluding."
Securing second place among boaters was Jason Putman from Cicero, NY, with a catch of 20.59 lbs. Jason mentioned, "I lack advanced electronics and possess limited lake familiarity, so I relied on my trolling motor for an entire day of power fishing. Fortunately, I encountered the right spots, mainly in the 8 to 12 feet depth range, characterized by a blend of rocks and grass. My primary bait was tubes, which I focused on along the grass line. I did catch a couple using a brown chatter bait, but tubes were my go-to."
Ian Renfrow from Phoenix, NY, secured the third position among boaters, weighing in five bass at 20.33 lbs. His catch included a notable 4.95-pound bass, earning him the Big Bass distinction for the tournament. Ian explained, "I concentrated on fishing just outside grass lines, employing the Alabama rig with 3.3” Keitech lures."
Tyler Morgan claimed the fourth spot with a catch of 19.17 lbs, followed by Casey Smith II, rounding out the top five boaters with 18.30 lbs.
Among co-anglers, Jordan Leclair from Ogdensburg, NY, achieved a solid result with a 3-fish limit weighing 13.23 lbs. Jordan shared, "Staying close, within a mile of the starting point, and fishing in 10 feet or shallower was my strategy. I relied on a hair jig, specifically a black 1/8 oz. jig with a touch of max scent worm."
Jacob Zaremski from Rochester, NY, secured the second position in the co-angler category with a catch of 10.61 lbs. Jacob noted, "I fished in depths of 10 to 15 feet, using drop shots and ned rigs, with a preference for green pumpkin colors."
Paul Decker from Milford, PA, clinched the third spot with 10.35 lbs as a co-angler. Paul mentioned, "I concentrated on shallow waters, employing chatter baits in green pumpkin color, mainly towards the eastern side in depths of 4 feet or less."
The fourth position among co-anglers was taken by Jeff Kenney with 10.24 lbs, followed by Chuck Vacanti in fifth place, weighing in at 9.79 lbs.
The Co-angler division's Big Bass award went to Aaron Busch from East Syracuse, NY, who landed a 4.44 lb fish.
