Ben and Ashley Sutton Secure Win on Lake Russell

Elberton, GA, November 18, 2023 – Ben and Ashley Sutton from Beech Island, SC, clinched first place in the American Couples Series South Carolina Division tournament. The event, held at Richard B. Russell State Park, saw the Suttons reel in five bass with a total weight of 10.90 pounds, featuring a notable 4.00-pound catch. This victory earned them a prize of $979.

The Suttons' strategy involved initially fishing standing timber down lake, where they caught three of their limit, including Ben’s 4.00-pound bass. They completed their limit and managed to cull by hitting brush piles on their return to the landing. They extended their gratitude to their sponsors for continued support.

Darren and Amy Taylor secured the second position with a total catch of 10.69 pounds, winning $544 in prize money. They employed shaky heads to fish stumps on river channel swings. Tom and Missy Bancroft followed in third place with a total weight of 10.28 pounds, earning $325. They adapted their strategy by targeting creek mouths with Texas rigs and drop shots after encountering local duck hunters at their initial spot.

Further notable performances included Jason and Leann Carnley in fourth place, with a total weight of 10.20 pounds ($218 prize), and Rudy and Melanie Smith in fifth, weighing in at 10.06 pounds ($109 prize). The Smiths also won the Ladies Big Bass with a 4.32-pound catch ($140), while Ben Sutton secured the Men's Big Bass ($145) with his 4.00-pound bass.

Top ten finishers included teams such as Dewayne and Kristina Cothran, JB and Tammy Wicker, Jim and Julie Collins, John and Susan Mills, and Harry and Kim Johnson.

Ben and Ashley Sutton also won the G-Line $100 Bounty for using a G-Line Lithium Battery-powered trolling motor. Additionally, Robert and Sally Young received the Berkeley Outdoors $50 Smallest Limit Award with their 4.60-pound catch.

In the American Couples Series, anglers pair up for a team effort. Most teams consist of a husband and a wife, but that’s not a rule. Teams can consist of a boyfriend and girlfriend combination, a father and daughter duo, or any combination of one male and one female.

The teams compete in several regional or state divisions throughout the year. Once a pair forms a team, however, the two must fish together as a team throughout the season to be eligible to accumulate points and qualify for the annual national championship.

The entry fee for the American Couples Series one-day events is $100, and the top teams are invited to compete in the championship each fall.

American Bass Anglers is sponsored by Caymas Boats, Mercury Marine, T-H Marine, RT Outdoors, Atlas Hydraulic Jackplate, Power Pole, Optima Batteries, HotelPlanner.com, and LurePartsOnline.com.

About American Bass Anglers: American Bass Anglers is committed to providing low-cost, close-to-home tournaments for the weekend angler and, at the same time, offering each competitor an upward path for individual angler progression.
