Army Team Win the 2024 Military Team Bass Tournament

May 10, 2024, Anderson, SC, The American Bass Angler’s Military Team Bass Tournament was won by the Army team of Randy Gillespie and Troy Henderson. The event was held on Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina, from May 8 to May 10. Although the event was scheduled for three days, fishing took place only on Wednesday and Friday due to extreme weather conditions that canceled Thursday’s activities.

Gillespie and Henderson took first place with a total weight of 29.67 pounds, earning a $2500 prize. They also won the Big Bass contest with 5.93 lbs, adding $870 to their winnings. Their strategic decision to fish in deeper waters, away from the banks, proved highly effective.

Navy veterans Jeffrey Nail and Jim Farmer captured second place with a 23.51-pound haul, winning $1000. They found success fishing shallow clay points and main lake points, making the most of the windy conditions with effective topwater techniques.

The Air Force duo of Bill Stines and Jason Turner claimed third place, bringing in 22.91 pounds and earning a $900 payout. They targeted very deep waters, around 20-30 feet deep, near a ditch off the main lake where they could see each fish they caught.

Solo angler Daniel Geurtsen secured fourth place with 22.54 pounds, netting an $850 prize. Preferring to fish alone, Geurtsen remarked humorously on the benefit of not having to argue with anyone but himself about fishing tactics.

George Kunkle and Clifton Holt rounded out the top five, earning a $750 prize with their 22.25-pound catch using spinner baits in shallow waters barely a foot deep.

Hosted by Visit Anderson (www.visitanderson.com), this event continues to be a favorite for military bass anglers, attracting 180 of the best Military anglers in the country. Special thanks to Visit Anderson and the city of Anderson, SC, for their warm hospitality.

Next year’s Military Team Bass Tournament is scheduled for April 29 to May 2, 2025, at West Point Lake in LaGrange, Georgia.
