Honoring the Fallen on Memorial Day

This Memorial Day, we all pause in solemn remembrance and gratitude for the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. As Americans, we are deeply indebted to those who gave their lives to protect the freedoms we hold dear.

Since our founding in 1976 as the Military Bass Anglers Association, the spirit of service has been woven into the fabric of who we are. Many of our members have worn the uniform. Many still do. And many more cast a line today in peaceful waters because someone else once stood in harm’s way to defend that right.

Across the country, Memorial Day weekend is marked with backyard barbecues, time on the lake, and gatherings with family and friends. It’s a celebration of life, a celebration of freedom, and of the American spirit. But we must never forget—this freedom we enjoy came at a high cost. The laughter around the grill, the calm of an early morning on the water, the cheers at a weigh-in—all of it is made possible by the men and women who gave everything so we could live free.

To those who have lost a brother, sister, friend, or fellow warrior, we stand with you. We remember them. We speak their names. And can all carry their legacy forward with honor by being patriots and living our lives in a way that honors their sacrifice.

On this day, especially, seeing the American Flag wave in the wind over cities, homes, and yes, even bass tournaments seems a little more special. It gives us great pride, but with the remembrance of the cost of our freedoms so freely given by patriots.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 3:15)

Let us never take for granted the quiet sunrise on the lake, the peaceful cast into open water, or the fellowship we share on tournament day. These moments are gifts, paid for by the courage of others.

To the families of the fallen, we offer our deepest respect and eternal gratitude. To our members who have passed on, we cherish your memory and your place in our story. And to those who continue to serve—thank you for guarding the freedoms we hold sacred.

From all of us at American Bass Anglers: this Memorial Day, we remember. We honor. We celebrate the freedom made possible by their sacrifice.

The True Cost of Freedom

Have you ever wondered just how many lives have been sacrificed for our freedoms? It’s a powerful and sobering number—the list of the fallen, the ones who fought to protect liberty and the American way of life.

As of the most recent estimates, over 1.3 million U.S. military service members have died in service to the country since the founding of the United States in 1775.

These are only estimates, but every number represents a life willingly given to protect what we hold dear. Below is a breakdown of estimated U.S. military deaths in major conflicts:

ConflictEstimated U.S. Military Deaths
American Revolutionary War (1775–83)– 25,000
War of 1812 (1812–15)– 15,000
Mexican-American War (1846–48)– 13,000
Civil War (1861–65)*– 620,000–750,000 (both sides)
Spanish-American War (1898)– 2,500
World War I (1917–18)– 116,000 (National Archives Link)
World War II (1941–45)– 405,000 (National Archives Link)
Korean War (1950–53)– 36,500 (National Archives Link)
Vietnam War (1955–75)– 58,000 (National Archives Link)
Gulf War (1990–91)– 300 (DOD site)
Afghanistan War (2001–2021)– 2,400 (DOD site)
Iraq War (2003–2011)– 4,500 (DOD site)
Other U.S. Military OperationsThousands more (DOD site)
Wounded in Action – Lives Forever Changed

It’s difficult to view this list without also thinking of those who were wounded protecting our freedoms. These numbers offer a glimpse into how many lives were forever changed in the defense of liberty:

  • American Revolutionary War: – 8,000 wounded
  • War of 1812: – 4,500 wounded
  • Mexican-American War: – 4,100 wounded
  • Civil War: – 500,000+ wounded
  • World War I: – 204,000 wounded
  • World War II: – 670,000 wounded
  • Korean War: – 103,000 wounded
  • Vietnam War: – 153,000 wounded
  • Gulf War: – 467 wounded
  • Afghanistan War: – 20,000 wounded
  • Iraq War: – 32,000 wounded

These figures remind us that the cost of war is measured not only in lives lost but also in lives permanently altered.

Standing Guard Today

We also honor the more than 200,000 U.S. military personnel stationed around the world today, across more than 170 countries and approximately 750 bases. These dedicated men and women serve in roles ranging from peacekeeping and combat readiness to humanitarian aid and training missions. Their presence ensures the continued defense of U.S. interests and global stability.

A Special Tribute to Gold Star Families

To the Gold Star families—those who have lost a loved one in military service—our hearts are with you. The loss you have endured is unimaginable, and your sacrifice is sacred. We honor not only the hero who gave their life, but you, who have borne that loss with strength and grace. On this Memorial Day, know that your loved one is remembered, respected, and deeply honored by all of us in the American Bass Anglers family.

We hope each of you has a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend, with the remembrance of those who made this freedom possible.
