Duke Nave to Represent Maryland at Ray Scott Championship

Duke Nave, a seasoned angler from Oxford, PA, is setting his sights on the Ray Scott Championship on Lake Seminole this week, bringing his wealth of experience and a year of notable achievements to the forefront. In 2023, Nave’s exceptional performance in the American Bass Anglers (ABA) Open Series events in Maryland, including two wins and two top-ten finishes, secured him the top rank coming out of the Maryland division and a spot in this prestigious championship.

At 45, Duke’s life is balanced between his passion for competitive bass fishing and his commitment to his family and faith. As a dedicated husband and father, Duke is profoundly grateful for the support of his wife, Angelica, who manages the home front and cares for their four young children, Duke III, Ava, Anna, and Dax, allowing him to pursue his passion at the national championship level. Duke’s professional life is equally commendable, dedicated to serving the nonprofit sector as the Finance Officer of the USAA Foundation and USAA Educational Foundation. These organizations are committed to supporting the military community through financial readiness training and initiatives aimed at reducing the veteran suicide rate.

Duke’s fishing career is marked by his qualifications for several Ray Scott Championships, with notable achievements such as making the final day top 25 cut at Old Hickory and finishing 7th at Lake Chickamauga, where he caught his personal best. These accomplishments fuel his aspirations to excel in regional trails and events, particularly on the Upper Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River, areas that offer a path to national recognition. Duke also shares his love for fishing and expertise through social media platforms, providing valuable tips and insights to fellow anglers.

Approaching the Ray Scott Championship at Lake Seminole, Duke faces the challenge of unfamiliar waters without the benefit of pre-practice due to the lengthy 15+ hour drive. His preparation included extensive research through YouTube, Google Earth, Navionics, Lakemaster, and other articles, solidifying his strategy as a shallow water specialist who innovatively uses electronics to enhance his fishing technique. Duke is cautiously optimistic about leveraging his unique approach to locate shallow bites, despite the potential difficulties posed by the forecasted windy conditions and the navigational hazards of Lake Seminole’s standing timber.

The dynamic of the competition, with many anglers experiencing Lake Seminole for the first time and varying levels of professional experience, levels the playing field and adds an element of unpredictability to the tournament. Duke humorously notes, “Someone will catch ’em, they always do. And if it’s not me, well, I’m still waiting for the tide to get right.”

Duke’s adaptability extends to his gear and approach, with a preference for fishing grass and power fishing but a willingness to adjust tactics as needed. His Caymas CX 19, equipped with an Atlas hydraulic jackplate and powered by a Mercury 225 four-stroke, underscores his readiness to tackle the diverse conditions of Lake Seminole. This championship represents not just another competition for Duke but an opportunity to blend his love for fishing with the values of faith, family, and service that define his life.
